# Can children take iron and calcium together? A paediatrician explains

**The short answer:** No. Iron and calcium should *never* be taken at the same time. Calcium significantly inhibits the absorption of iron in the digestive tract. Always space iron supplements and calcium supplements (or dairy milk) at least 2 to 3 hours apart.

## Why do iron and calcium clash?

In the small intestine, iron and calcium utilize similar transport pathways to enter the bloodstream. When both minerals arrive simultaneously, calcium competitively binds to transport receptors, blocking the uptake of iron. Clinical nutrition studies indicate that taking calcium with iron can reduce iron absorption by up to 50% or more.

## The correct timing schedule

If your child has been prescribed both iron and calcium (or drinks large quantities of cow’s milk), follow this practical schedule:

- **Morning (e.g. after breakfast):** Give the iron supplement together with a source of vitamin C (such as a glass of water, fresh oranges, or amla juice), which actively enhances iron absorption. Avoid giving milk during this meal.
- **Afternoon or Evening:** Give the calcium supplement (or glass of milk) later in the day, separated by at least 2 to 3 hours from the morning iron dose.

## Critical safety notice: accidental iron overdose

**Iron is not a candy:** Accidental ingestion of excessive iron is one of the leading causes of acute toxic poisoning in young children worldwide. Because gummy supplements taste pleasantly of fruit, young children may attempt to eat multiple gummies if left unsupervised.

- Always store iron supplements high up in a closed cupboard, completely out of reach and sight of children.
- Never refer to vitamin gummies as “candies” or “sweets” to children.
- If a child consumes multiple iron gummies, call your paediatrician or visit an emergency room immediately with the product packaging.

## Does every child need iron or calcium supplements?

No. Supplements should never be given casually without clinical assessment. Iron deficiency should be confirmed by a doctor, ideally with diagnostic blood testing (haemoglobin and ferritin). Similarly, children who drink adequate milk and consume curd, paneer, and sesame seeds generally get sufficient calcium from diet.
