Explore supplements for active kids Our beginnings ## We didn’t start Chubears in a boardroom. ### We started it at home. Chubears was created by paediatrician [Dr. Gaurav Gupta](https://drgauravgupta.org/) and Dr. Poonam Gupta in response to the practical challenge of giving children nutritional supplements. When their daughter was training as a competitive gymnast, she needed extra nutritional support. But the syrups were refused because of bad taste, tablets were hard to swallow, and imported gummies were expensive and poorly calibrated for Indian diets. So they formulated their own gummy vitamins—measuring every nutrient against ICMR allowances and making them completely vegetarian. Chubears are doctor-designed, vegetarian chewable gummy nutritional supplements for Indian children, formulated with citrus fruit pectin and calibrated against ICMR dietary guidelines. ### What age are Chubears gummies for? The labels specify a child serving for ages 5 to 17 and an adult serving for 18+. For children under five, ask your paediatrician first. Chewy sweets can be a choking risk for toddlers. ### Are Chubears vegetarian and gelatin-free? Yes. All Chubears gummies are set with fruit pectin, not animal gelatin. They are 100% vegetarian, gluten-free, and free from dairy, nuts, soy, and eggs. ### Do all children need a multivitamin? No. A child who eats a diverse, wholesome diet with dal, vegetables, fruit, grains and milk may not need one. Multivitamins are useful to fill specific gaps in picky eaters or restricted diets. ### Can I give the Iron and Calcium gummies together? Give them at different times of day. Calcium significantly reduces iron absorption when the two are taken together. ### Where can I buy Chubears in India? You can buy Chubears directly on our official website, [chubears.in](https://chubears.in/), with free delivery across India, or via Amazon.in. Source: https://chubears.in/about/ (last updated 2026-09-28) Our story # We didn’t start Chubears in a boardroom. We started it at home. Chubears was created by paediatrician Dr. Gaurav Gupta and Dr. Poonam Gupta in response to a practical challenge every parent and paediatrician knows: getting children to take necessary supplements shouldn’t become a daily battle. ## What is Chubears? Chubears is a paediatrician-founded Indian brand of chewable gummy nutritional supplements for children. We formulate vegetarian, gelatin-free gummy vitamins specifically aligned with Indian dietary habits and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR-NIN) recommendations. ## Who founded Chubears? Chubears was founded by a doctor couple: **[Dr. Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics](https://drgauravgupta.org/)**, and **Dr. Poonam Gupta**. Between them, they have over 40 years of medical experience caring for children and advising parents through clinical practice, parenting workshops, podcasts, and digital health education. ## Why was it created? The inspiration came from their own home. Their daughter was training intensively as a young gymnast, and like many active children, needed supplemental nutrition. But the options on pharmacy shelves were discouraging: thick, metallic-tasting syrups that children dreaded, chalky tablets that were hard to swallow, or expensive imported gummies with foreign dosing standards. They realized that *a supplement only works if a child actually takes it*. So they set out to formulate a gummy vitamin that children would willingly ask for and parents could trust completely. ## Who are the products intended for? Chubears products are intended for Indian children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 years who have specific nutritional gaps or where supplementation is recommended by their doctor. The formulas are also safe for adults (at a 2-gummy serving). For children under 5 years of age, we always recommend consulting a paediatrician first, because chewable gummies can present a choking hazard for toddlers who have not mastered thorough chewing. ## Where are the products made? All Chubears gummies are manufactured in India. They are produced in state-of-the-art, FSSAI-licensed, GMP-certified, and HACCP-compliant facilities under strict quality controls and food safety standards. ## What makes Chubears different? - **Formulated by paediatricians, not marketers:** Dosing is calibrated carefully for children’s physiological needs, not packed with unnecessary mega-doses. - **100% vegetarian & pectin-based:** We use citrus fruit pectin rather than animal gelatin, making our gummies suitable for all Indian vegetarian households. - **Gentle on little stomachs:** For our Iron gummies, we selected microencapsulated ferric pyrophosphate (SunActive® Fe), which minimizes gastric irritation and eliminates the bitter, metallic taste that makes iron syrups notorious. - **Natural plant-based colours:** Coloured exclusively with curcumin (from turmeric) and black carrot concentrate, with zero synthetic food dyes. - **Hypoallergenic formulation:** Free from gluten, milk, eggs, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, wheat, and sulphites. ## What does “made for Indian children” mean? Indian children have unique dietary patterns, predominantly vegetarian or grain-heavy meals, which often lead to specific nutritional vulnerabilities such as suboptimal intake of vitamin B12, vitamin D, iron, and zinc. Rather than importing foreign formulations built around western diets, Chubears calibrates nutrient percentages against the **ICMR-NIN 2020 Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA)** for Indian children, providing appropriate daily nutritional support without risk of excessive accumulation. ## What quality and regulatory standards apply? Chubears is marketed by Gapco Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Mohali, Punjab, operating under **Central FSSAI Licence No. 12124999000106**. Our manufacturing partners adhere strictly to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards. In 2015, Chubears was honoured with the Certificate of Excellence at the Brand Achievers Awards as *India’s Favorite Gummy Vitamins*. ## What Chubears does NOT claim to do Medical honesty is central to everything we do. We believe parents deserve facts, not exaggerated marketing: - Chubears gummies are nutraceutical food supplements, **not medicines or drugs**. - We do **not** claim to boost immunity, prevent infections, cure illnesses, increase height, or make children smarter. - Supplements do **not** replace a wholesome, balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, pulses, whole grains, and dairy. - We do not recommend self-treating suspected nutritional deficiencies. Always consult your paediatrician for proper diagnosis and guidance. ## Explore our range Discover doctor-designed gummy vitamins created specifically for your child’s daily nutritional needs. Source: https://chubears.in/faq/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # Frequently asked questions Concise, doctor-led answers to common questions about children’s nutrition, safety, dosing, and ordering Chubears in India. ## About Chubears & Ingredients ### What are Chubears? Chubears are doctor-designed chewable gummy nutritional supplements for Indian children. They provide essential vitamins and minerals in a tasty, fruit-flavoured pectin gummy that children willingly take, helping fill everyday dietary gaps without daily battles. ### Who makes Chubears? Chubears was formulated by paediatricians [Dr. Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics](https://drgauravgupta.org/) and Dr. Poonam Gupta. It is a brand of Gapco Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Mohali, Punjab (FSSAI Lic. No. 12124999000106), and is manufactured in FSSAI-licensed, GMP-certified facilities in India. ### Are Chubears made in India? Yes. 100% of Chubears products are manufactured and packaged in India under strict Indian food safety and FSSAI standards. ### Are Chubears vegetarian and gelatin-free? Yes. All Chubears gummies are 100% vegetarian and gelatin-free. They are set using natural fruit pectin derived from citrus fruit peels, never animal gelatin. They are also gluten-free and free from major allergens including dairy, nuts, soy, and eggs. ### How much sugar is in a Chubears gummy? Each gummy contains approximately 1.5 g of sugar (the Iron formula contains 3.2 g per 2-gummy serving, part-sweetened with stevia). This is less than a third of a teaspoon of sugar per gummy—far less than a glass of flavoured milk or breakfast juice. They should be chewed as part of a daily routine and teeth brushed normally. ## Age & Dosing ### What age can children take Chubears? Chubears product labels specify daily servings for children and teenagers aged **5 to 17 years**, as well as an adult serving for 18+. For children under 5 years, always ask your paediatrician first, because chewable gummies can pose a choking hazard for toddlers who cannot chew thoroughly. ### How many Chubears gummies should a child take? **Multivitamin Gummies:** 1 gummy a day for children aged 5–17; 2 gummies for adults. **Iron Gummies:** 2 gummies a day (providing 13 mg elemental iron). **Calcium + Vitamin D Gummies:** 1 gummy a day for children aged 5–17; 2 gummies for adults. Always adhere to the printed label or the specific dose advised by your child’s doctor. ### Are gummy vitamins safe for children? Yes, when taken strictly according to serving recommendations. Because they taste like fruit treats, parents must keep bottles tightly closed and stored out of reach of young children. This is especially vital for iron supplements, where accidental excessive intake requires immediate medical evaluation. ## Medical & Nutritional Guidance ### Do all children need a multivitamin? No. A child who consistently eats a diverse, wholesome diet with plenty of vegetables, fruits, dals, whole grains, and dairy may not require a multivitamin. Supplementation is most appropriate for picky eaters, children with restricted diets, or those with identified nutritional gaps. Discuss with your paediatrician. ### Does my child need an iron supplement? Iron supplementation should be guided by a doctor. While iron deficiency is common among Indian children, iron should not be started blindly without clinical assessment or a blood test (such as haemoglobin and ferritin). If your paediatrician confirms low iron, Chubears Iron provides a gentle, non-metallic alternative to iron syrups. ### How much iron does a child need? Under the ICMR-NIN 2020 dietary recommendations, children aged 5 to 12 years require approximately 13 to 15 mg of elemental iron daily. Two Chubears Iron gummies provide 13 mg of elemental iron as ferric pyrophosphate, meeting 100% of this daily recommendation. ### Can iron and calcium be taken together? No. Iron and calcium compete for the same absorption pathways in the intestine. Calcium significantly impairs iron absorption. Always space iron supplements and calcium supplements (or dairy milk) at least 2 to 3 hours apart. ### Does my child need calcium and vitamin D? Growing children need calcium for bone and tooth mineralisation, and vitamin D is essential for the gut to absorb that calcium. Children who consume little dairy or spend minimal time in direct outdoor sunlight frequently have suboptimal levels. Chubears Strong Bones combines 125 mg calcium with 200 IU vitamin D per gummy. ## Ordering & Shipping ### Where can I buy Chubears in India? Source: https://chubears.in/guides/are-gummy-vitamins-safe-for-children/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # Are gummy vitamins safe for children? A doctor explains **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 5 min read **The short answer:** Yes, gummy vitamins are safe and effective for children when taken strictly according to age-appropriate daily servings. The active vitamins and minerals are absorbed just as reliably as liquids or tablets. However, because they look and taste like fruit sweets, two key safety rules must be followed: they must be stored safely out of reach of young children, and parents must monitor proper chewing to prevent choking in children under 5. ## Are the nutrients in gummies real and absorbable? Yes. The vitamins and minerals used in gummies (such as vitamin C, vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc, and iron) are the same bioactive pharmaceutical-grade ingredients found in traditional syrups and drops. Bioavailability studies confirm that when chewed thoroughly, gummies are absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract just as effectively as liquid multivitamins. ## What about sugar content? A common concern among parents is sugar. A high-quality children’s gummy vitamin contains about **1.5 grams of sugar per gummy** (equivalent to roughly 6 calories). To put this in perspective: - 1 glass of packaged fruit juice contains approx. 20 to 24 grams of sugar. - 1 cup of flavoured milk contains approx. 12 to 16 grams of sugar. - 1 chocolate biscuit contains approx. 4 to 6 grams of sugar. At 1.5 grams per day, the sugar content of a single gummy is negligible within a child’s total daily calorie intake. However, because it contains sugar, children should chew it as part of breakfast and maintain regular twice-daily toothbrushing. ## Choking safety and age limits Gummies require thorough chewing before swallowing. For this reason, official packaging recommends them for **children aged 5 to 17 years**. For toddlers and children under 5, chewable gummies can present a choking hazard if swallowed whole. If you wish to give a gummy to a younger child, always seek clearance from your paediatrician first. ## The golden rule: store them like medicine Because gummies taste delicious, young children may view them as candy and attempt to eat several if left accessible. This is especially dangerous for products containing **iron**, where accidental overdose can be toxic. **Parent rule:** Never refer to gummy vitamins as “candies”. Keep bottles closed with child-resistant caps and stored in a high cabinet completely out of children’s sight and reach. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics, is a paediatrician and co-founder of Chubears with over two decades of clinical experience in child health, safety, and nutrition at Charak Clinics, Mohali. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/does-my-child-need-a-multivitamin/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # Does my child need a multivitamin? A paediatrician explains **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 5 min read **The short answer:** Not all children need a multivitamin. A child who consistently eats a wholesome, diverse diet with vegetables, fresh fruits, dals, dairy, and whole grains generally receives adequate micronutrients from food. However, for picky eaters, children on restricted or vegetarian diets, or those with identified dietary gaps, a sensible children’s multivitamin can serve as a safe nutritional safety net. ## When is a multivitamin appropriate? In pediatric clinic practice, parents frequently worry that their children are falling behind on nutrition. Here are the specific scenarios where supplementation is commonly helpful: - **Selective or picky eaters:** Children who consistently refuse specific food groups, particularly green leafy vegetables, legumes, or citrus fruits. - **Predominantly vegetarian or vegan diets:** Plant-based diets provide abundant fibre and antioxidants, but may run low on bioavailable vitamin B12, vitamin D, and zinc. - **Children with poor appetite or erratic eating habits:** Children going through phases of meal refusal or high-intensity sports training where micronutrient demand is elevated. - **Documented clinical gaps:** Where dietary intake has been evaluated and found to fall below recommended daily allowances. ## When is a multivitamin NOT necessary? If your child has steady physical growth along their pediatric growth charts, displays good daily energy, and regularly eats a balanced variety of home-cooked meals, routine multivitamin supplementation is usually unnecessary. A pill or gummy cannot make up for poor lifestyle habits, and extra vitamins do not provide “extra energy” or make children taller. ## Gummy vs syrup: what should parents know? From a pharmacological standpoint, vitamins delivered in liquid syrup, chewable tablets, or gummies are absorbed similarly by the digestive tract. The real difference in pediatric practice is *compliance*: - **Syrups:** Often have a strong artificial medicinal taste and require measuring spoons. In many households, giving daily syrup becomes an exhausting negotiation that ends in tears. - **Gummies:** Taste like fruit treats, so children eagerly remind parents each morning. Because compliance is high, nutritional gaps are filled consistently. ## Can gummy vitamins harm teeth? Gummy vitamins contain a small amount of sugar (typically around 1.5 grams per gummy, less than a third of a teaspoon). Like any chewable food or fruit snack, gummy particles can linger on teeth. We advise parents to treat them as part of the breakfast routine and ensure normal twice-daily toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste. ## How to choose a safe children’s multivitamin - **Look for age-appropriate dosing:** Formulations should target 50% to 100% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for Indian children. Avoid products with massive “mega-doses”. - **Check for vegetarian ingredients:** Many gummy products use animal gelatin. Look for fruit pectin-based gummies if your family prefers vegetarian supplements. - **Avoid artificial food dyes:** Prefer natural plant concentrates like curcumin or black carrot juice over synthetic food colours. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta is a board-certified paediatrician with over two decades of clinical experience in child health, nutrition, and growth. The decisive advantage of gummy vitamins is *child compliance*: children willingly take them every day without tears, negotiations, or mealtime battles. For iron specifically, gummies also avoid the severe metallic taste and liquid tooth staining caused by iron tonics. ## A clinical comparison: Gummy vs Syrup | Factor | Chewable Gummy Vitamins | Traditional Liquid Syrups | | --- | --- | --- | | Taste & acceptance | Fruit-flavoured (lemon, strawberry, mango); highly enjoyed by children. | Often medicinal, chalky, or intensely metallic (especially iron). | | Daily compliance | Consistent daily intake; child asks for it enthusiastically. | Frequent refusal, spitting out, and forgotten doses. | | Tooth staining (Iron) | Chewed and swallowed; minimal contact with enamel. | Liquid iron washes over front teeth, causing dark enamel staining. | | Administration ease | No spoons, no measuring, no sticky counter spills. | Requires accurate measuring dropper or cup; prone to spills. | | Sugar content | Approx. 1.5 g sugar per gummy. | Often contains 2 to 4 g high-fructose corn syrup per 5 ml dose. | | Vegetarian status | Pectin-set gummies are 100% vegetarian. | Usually vegetarian, but may contain alcohol preservatives or animal glycerin. | ## Why compliance matters most in pediatric nutrition In pediatric clinic practice, we often encounter a familiar scenario: a doctor prescribes a liquid multivitamin or iron tonic, the parent buys the bottle, but after two days of intense screaming and spitting, the half-empty bottle sits abandoned in the medicine cabinet. **A supplement only works if a child actually consumes it every day.** This is why palatability is a legitimate clinical feature, not merely a marketing gimmick. ## What about sugar in syrups vs gummies? Many parents believe that medicinal syrups are “sugar-free”. In reality, liquid syrups require massive quantities of artificial sweeteners, sorbitol, or liquid sucrose to mask the harsh, bitter taste of raw minerals like iron and zinc. A typical 5 ml dose of pediatric syrup frequently contains 2 to 4 grams of sugar—more than the 1.5 grams present in a single Chubears gummy. ## When is syrup preferred? Syrups and liquid drops remain the preferred formulation for infants and toddlers under 3 years of age who have not yet developed molars to chew solids safely. Once a child reaches 5 years of age and chews food thoroughly, chewable gummies become a far more sustainable daily solution. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics, is a paediatrician and co-founder of Chubears. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/how-much-iron-does-a-child-need/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # How much iron does a child need? Doctor explains ICMR RDA **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 5 min read **The short answer:** According to the latest ICMR-NIN 2020 guidelines for Indian children, daily elemental iron requirements range from 11–15 mg for children aged 5 to 12 years, increasing to 16–29 mg for adolescents aged 13 to 17 years (with adolescent girls requiring higher amounts due to menstrual onset). Meeting this requirement through predominantly vegetarian diets requires intentional meal planning or targeted supplementation. ## ICMR-NIN 2020 Daily Iron Recommendations for Indian Children | Age group | Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) | | --- | --- | | Children 4–6 years | 11 mg / day | | Children 7–9 years | 15 mg / day | | Children 10–12 years | 15 mg / day | | Boys 13–15 years | 16 mg / day | | Girls 13–15 years | 29 mg / day | | Boys 16–18 years | 19 mg / day | | Girls 16–18 years | 29 mg / day | Source: Indian Council of Medical Research – National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN) 2020 Expert Group Report. ## Why is iron bioavailability lower in Indian diets? Indian diets are rich in grains and pulses. While these foods contain substantial iron, they also contain natural phytates, polyphenols, and oxalates that bind to iron and inhibit absorption. Only about 5% to 8% of plant-based (non-heme) iron is actually absorbed into the bloodstream, compared to 15% to 35% of heme iron from meat. ## How to maximise dietary iron absorption - **Add vitamin C to every meal:** Squeezing fresh lime over dal or eating amla or guava with meals can triple iron absorption. - **Sprout and ferment legumes:** Soaking, sprouting, and fermenting reduces phytate content by up to 50%. - **Cook in traditional cast iron vessels:** Cooking acidic foods (like tomato curries) in iron cookware leaches small amounts of dietary iron into the food. - **Separate dairy from iron-rich meals:** Calcium inhibits iron absorption. Avoid serving large cups of milk directly with lunch or dinner. ## How Chubears Iron gummies match these guidelines For children who need supplemental iron, [Chubears Iron Gummies](https://chubears.in/products/iron-gummies-for-kids/) are formulated with 13 mg of elemental iron per 2-gummy serving. For children aged 5 to 12, this represents approximately 100% of the daily ICMR allowance, delivered in a pleasant strawberry chew that eliminates the compliance struggles of traditional iron tonics. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics, is a paediatrician and co-founder of Chubears. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/how-much-vitamin-d-and-calcium-do-children-need/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # How much vitamin D and calcium do children need daily? **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 5 min read **The short answer:** Under ICMR-NIN 2020 guidelines, Indian children require 500 to 650 mg of calcium daily from ages 5 to 9, increasing to 850 to 1,000 mg during the pre-teen and teenage growth spurts (ages 10 to 17). The daily recommended intake of vitamin D is 400 to 600 IU (10 to 15 mcg). Because vitamin D is essential for the gut to absorb calcium, a shortfall in vitamin D leads to calcium deficiency even if dietary calcium appears adequate. ## Why do children need calcium and vitamin D together? Calcium provides the structural mineral framework for developing bones and permanent teeth. However, calcium cannot pass efficiently through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream without active vitamin D (which stimulates synthesis of calcium-binding transport proteins). Without sufficient vitamin D, only 10% to 15% of dietary calcium is absorbed. ## Why is vitamin D deficiency so prevalent in India? Despite living in a sunny country, clinical studies consistently find that over 70% to 80% of urban Indian children have suboptimal vitamin D levels. The primary reasons include: - **Limited outdoor playtime during peak UVB hours:** Children spend daylight hours in classrooms or indoor tuition. - **Air pollution and urban smog:** Atmospheric particulate matter filters out ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays required for skin synthesis. - **Skin pigmentation:** Higher melanin in Indian skin requires longer sunlight exposure compared to lighter skin types to produce equivalent vitamin D. - **Very few dietary sources:** Natural foods contain minimal vitamin D, making fortified foods or supplements important. ## Dietary sources of calcium for children In Indian vegetarian families, good calcium sources include: - **Dairy products:** Milk (approx. 120 mg calcium per 100 ml), curd/dahi, paneer, and chaas. - **Sesame seeds (til):** One of the richest plant sources of calcium. - **Ragi (finger millet):** An exceptional grain containing over 340 mg calcium per 100 g. - **Green leafy vegetables:** Methi, drumstick leaves (moringa), and amaranth. ## When are supplements helpful? For children who actively dislike milk, have lactose intolerance, or get minimal outdoor sun, combining calcium with vitamin D in a chewable format helps support bone mineralisation. [Chubears Strong Bones Calcium + Vitamin D Gummies](https://chubears.in/products/calcium-vitamin-d-gummies-for-kids/) deliver 125 mg of calcium and 200 IU of vegetarian vitamin D2 per gummy in a delicious mango and strawberry chew. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics, is a paediatrician and co-founder of Chubears. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/how-to-choose-a-childrens-multivitamin/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # How to choose a children's multivitamin: doctor checklist **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 5 min read **The short answer:** When choosing a children’s multivitamin, parents should look for four essential criteria: **moderate dosing** (50% to 100% of ICMR RDA, avoiding massive mega-doses), **clean gelling agents** (citrus pectin rather than animal gelatin for vegetarian families), **natural plant colours** (curcumin, black carrot juice instead of synthetic dyes), and **verified manufacturing standards** (FSSAI licensed, GMP certified). ## A 6-point paediatrician evaluation checklist ### 1. Check the nutrient percentages (%RDA) More is not better when it comes to children’s vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K) are stored in the body, and excessive daily doses can accumulate. A sensible pediatric formulation targets **30% to 100% of the daily Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)** for children. Be cautious of imported supplements designed for foreign diets or products boasting “1000% daily value”. ### 2. Look at the gelling agent: Pectin vs Gelatin Many commercial gummy vitamins use bovine or porcine gelatin derived from animal skin and bones. In Indian households, vegetarian supplements set with **fruit pectin** (derived naturally from citrus fruit peels) are preferred for dietary and cultural reasons, and provide a soft, easy-to-chew texture. ### 3. Avoid synthetic food dyes Look carefully at the ingredient label. Avoid synthetic artificial colours such as Tartrazine, Sunset Yellow, or Allura Red. Instead, look for plant-derived concentrates such as *curcumin* (turmeric extract) and *black carrot juice concentrate*. ### 4. Examine sugar and sweetener types A safe children’s gummy typically contains around 1.5 grams of sugar per gummy. Avoid products laden with excessive artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols (like maltitol or sorbitol in high quantities), which can cause gas, abdominal bloating, and laxative effects in sensitive children. ### 5. Ensure third-party quality & FSSAI licensing Confirm that the product is licensed under FSSAI regulations, manufactured in a facility compliant with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards. ### 6. Separate iron from general multivitamins when possible Iron has distinct absorption rules and should not be combined casually with calcium. If your child needs everyday nutritional balance, choose a comprehensive multivitamin. If they specifically need iron, use a dedicated, doctor-guided iron supplement taken at a separate time. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics, is a senior paediatrician and co-founder of Chubears. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/iron-and-calcium-gummies-how-to-give-them-safely/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # Can children take iron and calcium together? A paediatrician explains **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 4 min read **The short answer:** No. Iron and calcium should *never* be taken at the same time. Calcium significantly inhibits the absorption of iron in the digestive tract. Always space iron supplements and calcium supplements (or dairy milk) at least 2 to 3 hours apart. ## Why do iron and calcium clash? In the small intestine, iron and calcium utilize similar transport pathways to enter the bloodstream. When both minerals arrive simultaneously, calcium competitively binds to transport receptors, blocking the uptake of iron. Clinical nutrition studies indicate that taking calcium with iron can reduce iron absorption by up to 50% or more. ## The correct timing schedule If your child has been prescribed both iron and calcium (or drinks large quantities of cow’s milk), follow this practical schedule: - **Morning (e.g. after breakfast):** Give the iron supplement together with a source of vitamin C (such as a glass of water, fresh oranges, or amla juice), which actively enhances iron absorption. Avoid giving milk during this meal. - **Afternoon or Evening:** Give the calcium supplement (or glass of milk) later in the day, separated by at least 2 to 3 hours from the morning iron dose. ## Critical safety notice: accidental iron overdose **Iron is not a candy:** Accidental ingestion of excessive iron is one of the leading causes of acute toxic poisoning in young children worldwide. Because gummy supplements taste pleasantly of fruit, young children may attempt to eat multiple gummies if left unsupervised. - Always store iron supplements high up in a closed cupboard, completely out of reach and sight of children. - Never refer to vitamin gummies as “candies” or “sweets” to children. - If a child consumes multiple iron gummies, call your paediatrician or visit an emergency room immediately with the product packaging. ## Does every child need iron or calcium supplements? No. Supplements should never be given casually without clinical assessment. Iron deficiency should be confirmed by a doctor, ideally with diagnostic blood testing (haemoglobin and ferritin). Similarly, children who drink adequate milk and consume curd, paneer, and sesame seeds generally get sufficient calcium from diet. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics, is a paediatrician and co-founder of Chubears. It develops slowly as body iron stores deplete before full-blown anaemia appears. Common signs include fatigue, pale skin or inner eyelids, irritability, poor appetite, and reduced concentration in school. A definitive diagnosis requires a blood test (complete blood count and serum ferritin). Treatment combines dietary iron improvements with doctor-supervised iron supplementation. ## Why is iron so critical for children? Iron is an essential mineral required to produce haemoglobin, the protein inside red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to every organ in the body, including the growing brain. During childhood and adolescence, rapid blood volume expansion and muscle growth demand a constant supply of dietary iron. ## Common signs of iron deficiency in children Mild iron deficiency often goes unnoticed in early stages. As body iron stores fall, parents may notice: - **Unusual fatigue and low stamina:** Getting tired quickly during playground games or sports. - **Paleness:** Noticeable in the conjunctiva (inner lower eyelids), lips, tongue, or nail beds. - **Decreased attention and memory:** Difficulty focusing during schoolwork or frequent irritability. - **Poor appetite:** Paradoxically, low iron often dampens appetite, creating a vicious cycle where the child refuses food. - **Pica:** Craving non-food items such as ice, chalk, clay, or raw rice. - **Frequent minor infections:** Due to suboptimal immune cell responses. ## How is iron deficiency tested? Never guess or start high-dose iron without diagnostic confirmation. A paediatrician will typically order: - **Complete Blood Count (CBC / Hemogram):** Measures haemoglobin, haematocrit, and red cell indices (MCV and MCH, which show small, pale red blood cells in iron deficiency). - **Serum Ferritin:** The gold standard test for measuring the body’s stored iron reserves. A low ferritin confirms iron depletion even before haemoglobin drops. ## Dietary sources of iron in Indian households Iron in food comes in two forms: *heme iron* (found in poultry, meat, and fish; highly absorbable) and *non-heme iron* (found in plant foods). In vegetarian Indian diets, non-heme iron can be boosted by serving: - Lentils, chickpeas (chana), rajma, and sprouted beans. - Dark leafy greens such as spinach (palak), methi, and amaranth. - Jaggery (gur), dates, raisins, and dried figs. - Whole grains such as bajra, ragi, and fortified flours. **Absorption tip:** Always pair plant iron with vitamin C (lemon juice on dal, sliced tomatoes, or an orange) and keep milk or tea away from meals, as calcium and tannins hinder iron absorption. ## When are iron supplements needed? When a blood test confirms low iron reserves or anaemia, dietary changes alone are rarely fast enough to rebuild depleted marrow stores. A paediatrician will prescribe an iron supplement for 2 to 3 months. For children who refuse traditional bitter iron syrups, [Chubears Iron Gummies](https://chubears.in/products/iron-gummies-for-kids/) provide 13 mg of elemental iron per 2 gummies as ferric pyrophosphate (SunActive® Fe), a gentle form with zero metallic taste and no liquid tooth staining. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics, is a senior paediatrician with over 20 years of clinical experience in child health, growth tracking, and paediatric haematology at Charak Clinics, Mohali. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/nutritional-deficiencies-in-indian-children/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # Nutritional deficiencies in Indian children: a doctor's guide **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 6 min read **The short answer:** Despite overall economic improvements, micronutrient deficiencies (termed “hidden hunger”) remain widespread among Indian children across all socioeconomic strata. The three most prevalent deficiencies are **iron**, **vitamin D**, and **vitamin B12**, often compounded by low intake of zinc and calcium. These occur primarily due to vegetarian diets, low bioavailability of plant minerals, limited outdoor sun exposure, and excessive intake of refined carbohydrates. ## The Top 4 Micronutrient Shortfalls in India ### 1. Iron deficiency & anaemia National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) data indicates that more than 50% of Indian children under 14 have some degree of anaemia. The primary cause in Indian households is low dietary bioavailability of non-heme iron from pulses and cereals, combined with early tea consumption or excessive milk intake that inhibits iron uptake. Symptoms include low stamina, pale inner eyelids, reduced concentration, and frequent sick days. ### 2. Vitamin D deficiency Clinical studies show that 70% to 80% of urban Indian children have deficient or insufficient 25(OH)D levels. Limited outdoor play during midday, high urban smog that blocks UVB wavelengths, and natural melanin in Indian skin (which requires longer sun exposure to synthesise vitamin D) all contribute. Vitamin D is essential for absorbing calcium and building strong bones and teeth. ### 3. Vitamin B12 deficiency Vitamin B12 is produced exclusively by micro-organisms and is found almost entirely in animal-source foods. In strictly vegetarian Indian homes, dairy (milk, curd, paneer) is the only natural source, and boiling milk repeatedly degrades B12 content. Vitamin B12 is vital for red blood cell formation, brain development, and myelin nerve sheath maintenance. ### 4. Zinc and calcium gaps Zinc is essential for immune function, taste perception, and cellular growth. In grain-heavy diets, phytates bind zinc in the gut, reducing absorption. Calcium is often deficient in children who dislike milk or consume minimal dairy. ## Why do these deficiencies occur even in affluent families? Parents often assume nutritional deficiencies only affect underprivileged children. In our pediatric clinics, we routinely diagnose iron and vitamin D deficiencies in children from wealthy households. The reasons include: - **Picky eating:** High consumption of processed bakery snacks, noodles, and fried foods that provide calories without essential micronutrients. - **Excessive cow’s milk intake:** Toddlers drinking 800–1000 ml of milk daily feel full and refuse wholesome meals, while calcium in the milk prevents iron absorption. - **Screen time displacing outdoor sun:** Modern children spend less than 30 minutes daily in direct outdoor sunlight. ## Evidence-based solutions for parents - **Improve diet quality:** Incorporate sprouted pulses, seasonal vegetables, nuts, seeds, and fermented foods daily. - **Pair foods intelligently:** Add vitamin C (lemon juice, tomatoes, oranges) to meals to increase plant iron absorption. Space dairy and tea apart from main meals. - **Prioritise outdoor play:** Encourage 30 to 45 minutes of daily outdoor physical activity in daylight. - **Targeted supplementation:** Where dietary intake falls short or blood tests show low reserves, use doctor-designed supplements calibrated to ICMR allowances. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics, is a senior paediatrician and co-founder of Chubears. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/picky-eater-tips-from-a-paediatrician/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # My child is a picky eater. What should parents know? **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 6 min read **The paediatrician’s core advice:** Picky eating is almost always a normal developmental stage, not a behavioral defiance. Forcing, bribing, or running behind a child with a plate increases anxiety and worsens food aversion. The parent decides *what*, *when*, and *where* to serve; the child decides *if* and *how much* to eat. ## 10 practical strategies for Indian parents ### 1. End the mealtime battleground Never force-feed or threaten punishments. When mealtimes become an emotional battle, children associate food with stress rather than nourishment. ### 2. Establish fixed meal schedules Graze eating throughout the day ruins appetite. Keep a 3 to 4 hour gap between meals and healthy snacks so children arrive at the table genuinely hungry. ### 3. Limit milk to 400–500 ml daily In Indian homes, excessive milk consumption (3 to 4 big glasses daily) is one of the single biggest causes of poor appetite and iron deficiency in toddlers and pre-schoolers. Milk is filling, but lacks iron and fibre. ### 4. Serve one familiar “safe” food Whenever you introduce a new sabzi or lentil, always include one food item on the thali that your child already likes and eats comfortably. ### 5. Involve children in kitchen preparation Children are significantly more willing to taste foods they helped select at the grocery market or wash in the kitchen. ### 6. Avoid screens during meals Distracted feeding with phones or tablets prevents children from recognizing satiety cues and hinders the development of mindful eating habits. ### 7. Keep portions realistic An adult-sized mound of food is intimidating. Offer small portions and allow the child to ask for seconds. ### 8. Expose, don’t push Children often need to see, smell, or touch a new vegetable 10 to 15 times before feeling comfortable tasting it. Repetition without pressure is key. ### 9. Model healthy eating yourself Children observe family eating patterns. If parents eat salads and varied seasonal vegetables enthusiastically, children naturally follow over time. ### 10. Use a sensible nutritional bridge when needed During intense picky eating phases, a balanced children’s multivitamin can offer parents peace of mind by covering micronutrient gaps while you patiently work on eating habits. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics, is a paediatrician and co-founder of Chubears. A paediatrician explains why whole foods come first and how targeted supplements fill real dietary gaps. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/supplements-vs-balanced-diet-for-kids/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # Supplements vs a balanced diet: what parents need to know **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 5 min read **The paediatrician’s foundational principle:** Nutritional supplements are designed to *supplement* a child’s diet, not replace real food. No pill, powder, syrup, or gummy can substitute for the complex synergy of dietary fibre, proteins, healthy fats, phytonutrients, and natural enzymes found in whole foods like dals, seasonal vegetables, whole grains, and fresh fruits. ## Why real food comes first In pediatric medicine, whole foods provide benefits that cannot be packaged into a supplement: - **Dietary fibre:** Essential for healthy gut microbiome diversity, regular bowel movements, and blood sugar regulation. Supplements do not provide dietary fibre in meaningful amounts. - **Complex food matrix synergy:** Nutrients in whole foods work in intricate biological harmony. For instance, the vitamin C, bioflavonoids, and organic acids in an orange enhance nutrient absorption far beyond an isolated ascorbic acid pill. - **Development of healthy eating habits:** Chewing diverse textures, experiencing varied flavors, and learning to enjoy family meals are vital developmental milestones for lifelong health. ## Where do supplements fit in? If food is superior, why do pediatricians recommend supplements at all? Because the real world of parenting is rarely textbook-perfect: - **Picky eating phases:** Children frequently go through months of refusing green vegetables or proteins, creating specific micronutrient shortfalls during key growth windows. - **Soil depletion & modern food processing:** Highly refined grains and extended storage times can diminish micronutrient density in household foods. - **Specific dietary constraints:** Strict vegetarian families have limited natural access to bioavailable vitamin B12, and limited sun exposure leads to widespread vitamin D insufficiency. - **Clinical deficiencies:** When a child is diagnosed with iron deficiency or rickets, dietary food alone is too slow to replenish depleted biological reserves. ## The balanced parenting approach Think of children’s supplements as an **insurance policy or a nutritional bridge**. Continue serving balanced, colourful meals at the family dinner table without force-feeding. A gentle, doctor-designed multivitamin or targeted mineral chew can offer peace of mind by filling everyday gaps while you patiently cultivate healthy food habits. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics, is a senior paediatrician and co-founder of Chubears. Paediatrician guidance for Indian vegetarian families. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/vegetarian-diets-and-childrens-nutrition/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # Vegetarian diets and children's nutrition: doctor guide **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 5 min read **The short answer:** A well-planned vegetarian diet can completely support normal growth and cognitive development in children. However, because plant-based foods have lower bioavailability for certain key minerals and lack natural vitamin B12, vegetarian parents must deliberately plan for four critical nutrients: **vitamin B12**, **iron**, **vitamin D**, and **zinc**. ## 1. Vitamin B12: The non-negotiable nutrient Vitamin B12 is synthesized exclusively by bacteria and is naturally absent in unfortified plant foods. In lacto-vegetarian diets, dairy products (milk, yogurt, paneer) are the primary natural source. However, research shows that boiling milk repeatedly reduces B12 content by 30% to 50%. A vegetarian child who drinks minimal milk or eats little curd is at significant risk of B12 deficiency, which can cause anaemia, lethargy, and neurological symptoms. Regular supplementation with a multivitamin containing bioactive B12 is strongly advised for vegetarian children. ## 2. Iron: Bioavailability vs Total Intake Vegetarian meals in India (dals, chana, rajma, palak, methi) often contain generous amounts of total iron. However, this is *non-heme iron*, which is bound by dietary phytates and oxalates, yielding an absorption rate of only 5% to 8%. To boost plant iron absorption: - Add vitamin C (lemon juice, tomatoes, oranges) to pulse dishes. - Soak and sprout whole grams (moong, chana) before cooking. - Keep dairy milk and chai separated from main meals by at least 2 hours. ## 3. Vitamin D & Calcium Calcium is usually well-supplied if a child eats curd and paneer. However, calcium cannot be absorbed without vitamin D. Because neither vegetarian nor non-vegetarian foods contain substantial natural vitamin D, regular sunlight exposure or supplementation is essential for bone mineralization. ## 4. Zinc & Protein Plant-based protein combinations such as dal-chawal (pulses + rice) or roti-dal (cereals + pulses) provide complete complementary amino acid profiles. Adding roasted chana, nuts (almonds, walnuts), seeds (pumpkin, sesame), and paneer ensures adequate zinc and protein intake. ## Why Chubears is formulated for vegetarian homes Many children’s gummy supplements imported into India use animal gelatin derived from pigs or cattle. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/vitamin-d-deficiency-in-indian-children-why-indoor-kids-are-at-risk/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # Vitamin D Deficiency in Indian Children: Why Indoor Kids Are at Risk **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 5 min read **The short answer:** Despite abundant sunlight in India, vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent among children. This is largely due to modern indoor lifestyles, pollution, darker skin pigmentation which reduces vitamin D synthesis, and dietary factors. Recognizing symptoms like bone pain, delayed growth, and frequent infections is key, as is taking preventive measures through diet and age-appropriate supplementation. ## The "Sunshine Paradox" in India India receives ample sunshine throughout the year, yet research shows a surprisingly high rate of **vitamin D deficiency in children across India**. In my 20+ years of practice in Mohali, I have seen this paradox firsthand. [DOCTOR TO PERSONALIZE: Share a brief anecdote about a patient whose parents were surprised by a low vitamin D level despite living in sunny Punjab]. Several factors contribute to this widespread issue: - **Indoor Lifestyles:** Children today spend far more time indoors—whether at school, in tuition classes, or playing on screens—compared to previous generations. - **Skin Pigmentation:** Melanin, the pigment that gives Indian skin pigmentation its colour, acts as a natural sunscreen. While it protects against skin cancer, it also means our children need longer exposure to sunlight to produce the same amount of vitamin D as lighter-skinned children. - **Air Pollution:** Smog and pollution in many Indian cities scatter UVB rays, preventing them from reaching the skin effectively. - **Clothing and Sunscreen:** Cultural preferences for modest clothing and the increased use of sunscreen further limit direct skin exposure to the sun. - **Vegetarian Diets:** Natural dietary sources of vitamin D are extremely limited and mostly non-vegetarian (like fatty fish and egg yolks). For children on a vegetarian diet, getting enough vitamin D from food alone is nearly impossible. ## Signs and Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency Vitamin D is crucial for absorbing calcium and phosphorus, the building blocks of strong bones. A deficiency might not show obvious signs initially, but over time, it can lead to: - **Bone and Muscle Pain:** Children may complain of aching legs, especially at night. - **Delayed Motor Development:** In infants and toddlers, milestones like walking might be delayed. - **Rickets:** Severe deficiency can lead to soft, weakened bones, resulting in bowed legs or a curved spine. - **Frequent Infections:** Vitamin D plays a vital role in immune function. A lack of it may lead to recurrent colds and respiratory infections. - **Fatigue and Weakness:** Unexplained lethargy and generalized weakness can also be a sign. ## Testing and Diagnosis If you suspect your child might be deficient, your paediatrician may recommend a simple blood test called the **25-hydroxy vitamin D test**. According to the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) guidelines, a level below 12 ng/mL is considered deficient, while levels between 12-20 ng/mL are insufficient. ## Prevention and Treatment ### 1. Safe Sun Exposure Encourage outdoor play, ideally exposing the arms and legs for about 15-30 minutes between 10 AM and 3 PM when UVB rays are strongest. However, balancing this with heat and pollution concerns is often difficult in Indian cities. ### 2. Dietary Adjustments While challenging, incorporating fortified foods (like some milks and cereals) and egg yolks or fish (if non-vegetarian) can help. You can learn more about balancing these needs in our guide on [vegetarian diets and children's nutrition](https://chubears.in/guides/vegetarian-diets-and-childrens-nutrition/). ### 3. Supplementation Because diet and sunlight are often inadequate, the IAP recommends vitamin D supplementation for infants and strongly suggests monitoring older children. For toddlers and older kids, a daily supplement is often the most reliable way to maintain healthy levels. When choosing a supplement, it's often beneficial to pair vitamin D with calcium, as they work together for bone health. Read our detailed guide on [how much vitamin D and calcium children need](https://chubears.in/guides/how-much-vitamin-d-and-calcium-do-children-need/) for specific age-wise requirements. ### Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics, is a senior paediatrician with over 20 years of clinical experience in child health, growth tracking, and paediatric haematology at Charak Clinics, Mohali. A paediatrician explains chewing readiness, toddler choking risks, and age-based serving guidelines. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/what-age-can-kids-take-gummy-vitamins/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # What age can children take gummy vitamins safely? **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 4 min read **The short answer:** The recommended age for gummy vitamins is **5 years and above** (ages 5 to 17). By age 5, children have full sets of primary teeth, developed chewing coordination, and the ability to chew food thoroughly before swallowing. For children under 5 years of age, chewable gummies can pose a choking risk, and parents should consult their paediatrician before introducing any chewable supplement. ## Why is the recommended age set at 5 years? This recommendation is based primarily on **choking prevention** rather than biochemical toxicity. Toddlers and young children under 4 or 5 often gulp sweets or chewables without breaking them down fully with their molars. If a chewy gummy is swallowed whole, it can obstruct a narrow pediatric airway. ## Age-by-age developmental guide | Child’s age | Appropriate format | Paediatrician advice | | --- | --- | --- | | 0 to 2 years (Infants & Toddlers) | Liquid drops | Gummies are strictly unsuitable due to choking risk. Administer liquid drops via graduated oral syringe as prescribed by your doctor. | | 3 to 4 years (Pre-schoolers) | Syrup or crushed chewables (Doctor supervised) | Some children chew well, but choking risk remains high. If a doctor recommends chewables, parents must supervise every bite closely. | | 5 to 12 years (School-age children) | Chewable gummy vitamins | Ideal age for gummy vitamins. Dr. Gaurav Gupta explains the milk mistake, lemon tricks, and fixes. Source: https://chubears.in/guides/why-vegetarian-indian-kids-need-iron-support/ (last updated 2026-09-28) # “She Eats Dal Every Day. Why Is Her Hemoglobin Low?” **Written by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics** · Medically reviewed by Dr Gaurav Gupta, MD Pediatrics Updated 28 September 2026 · 4 min read **The bottom line:** A vegetarian thali has plenty of iron, but plant iron is difficult for young intestines to absorb—especially when washed down with three big tumblers of cow’s milk. You do not need to abandon a vegetarian diet. You only need to fix two kitchen habits. “Doctor, we cook fresh food at home. She eats palak, dal, and roti. How can her hemoglobin be only 9.5?” I hear this from vegetarian parents in our clinic almost every day. The unspoken fear is guilt: *did our family diet fail our daughter?* No. More than six out of every ten Indian toddlers have mild iron deficiency, even in families with abundant food on the table. The problem is almost never the amount of iron on the plate. The problem is what happens to that iron inside the stomach. ## The Big Culprit: Too Much Milk In most Indian households, milk is treated as the ultimate health food. If a toddler refuses dinner, parents sigh with relief when she finishes a 250 ml glass of warm milk at bedtime. Here is what nobody tells parents: **calcium and iron fight for the exact same door into the bloodstream.** When a child drinks three or four glasses of milk a day, calcium wins every time. The iron in the lunch dal simply passes out in the stool without being absorbed. And if your daughter is currently drinking a litre of milk a day, do not beat yourself up. We all did what our elders told us. Just start dialing it down tomorrow to two small cups (about 400 ml total). ## Three Small Habits That Double Iron Absorption **1. Squeeze half a fresh lemon over the dal.** Plant iron needs acid to break down into an absorbable form. Vitamin C is the most potent iron enhancer in nature. A squeeze of nimbu on the sabzi or giving sliced oranges with a meal immediately doubles the iron that actually enters the blood. **2. Keep a two-hour gap between milk and meals.** Give milk in the morning after waking up, or as a standalone snack. Never use milk as a beverage to wash down lunch or dinner. **3. Soak and sprout your pulses.** Raw lentils and grains contain natural compounds called phytates that trap iron. Traditional soaking overnight or sprouting moong breaks down phytates and frees the trapped minerals. ## The Subtle Tells to Look For Iron deficiency does not happen overnight. You will notice behavioural tells before any blood test: - Fussy at mealtimes and irritable by late afternoon, even after a nap. - Tiring quickly at the playground compared to other children. - Chewing on ice cubes, licking chalk, or trying to eat pencil erasers (a classic reflex called pica). ## When a Supplement Helps If hemoglobin has dropped below 11, diet alone can take six to nine months to rebuild bone-marrow iron reserves. Liquid iron tonics work, but many children spit them out because of the harsh metallic aftertaste, or parents stop giving them because they stain the front teeth black. That is why gentle, chewable iron gummies with Vitamin C exist—to serve as a temporary two-to-three-month bridge while you get the kitchen habits in place. They do not replace a balanced thali, but they ensure your daughter does not spend her preschool growth months running on low fuel. **Explore Chubears:** Learn more about our [Chewable Iron & Vitamin C Gummies](https://chubears.in/products/iron-gummies-for-kids/) formulated specifically for growing children with pediatric safety limits. --- > What personal data Chubears collects when you order, why, who it is shared with, and your rights under India's DPDP Act. What is it? Chubears Strong Bones Calcium + Vitamin D Gummies are doctor-formulated chewable supplements that combine essential bone-building minerals and vitamins. Each gummy contains 125 mg of elemental calcium paired with 200 IU (5 mcg) of vitamin D2. They are set with citrus fruit pectin and naturally flavoured with mango and strawberry, providing a delicious alternative to chalky, hard-to-swallow calcium tablets or syrups. ## 2. Who is it for? Chubears Strong Bones is designed for: - **Children who consume little or no milk:** Including children who dislike dairy or have low dietary calcium intake. - **Growing pre-teens and adolescents:** Whose rapid skeletal growth requires steady daily mineralisation support. - **Children with limited outdoor sun exposure:** Who may not synthesize adequate cutaneous vitamin D. - **Adults (18+):** For gentle chewable calcium support (serving: 2 gummies daily). *Paediatric guidance:* Supplementation should complement, not replace, natural dietary sources such as dairy, sesame, curd, and green vegetables. ## 3. What does it contain? Formulated with complementary active ingredients that work synergistically: - **Calcium (Tricalcium Phosphate):** A highly absorbable calcium salt that provides elemental calcium along with phosphorus, both vital for bone matrix density. - **Vitamin D (Ergocalciferol, Vitamin D2):** The intestinal absorption of calcium depends fundamentally on vitamin D. Without adequate vitamin D, dietary calcium cannot be efficiently absorbed. ## 4. How should it be taken? - **Children 5 to 17 years:** 1 gummy a day, chewed well. - **Adults (18+):** 2 gummies a day. - **Keep away from iron:** Calcium reduces the intestinal absorption of iron. If your child takes an iron supplement (such as Chubears Iron), separate them by at least 2 hours. **Storage:** Keep in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep the lid tightly fastened and store safely out of reach of young children. ## 5. Ingredients Corn syrup, sugar, water, gelling agent (pectin INS 440), tricalcium phosphate, ergocalciferol (vitamin D2), acidity regulators (citric acid INS 330, sodium citrate INS 331i), natural and nature-identical flavours (mango, strawberry), natural colours (curcumin, black carrot juice concentrate). **Gelling agent:** 100% Citrus Fruit Pectin. Zero animal gelatin. ## 7. Allergen information 100% vegetarian. Free from animal gelatin, gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, tree nuts, peanuts, fish, wheat, and sulphites. ## 8. Manufacturing & quality information Marketed by Gapco Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Mohali, Punjab (Central FSSAI Licence No. 12124999000106). Frequently asked questions ### How many Calcium gummies should a child take daily? The label specifies one gummy per day for children aged 5 to 17 years, and two gummies for adults. Always consult your paediatrician if a higher therapeutic dose has been prescribed. ### Why is vitamin D included with calcium? Calcium cannot be absorbed efficiently by the body without vitamin D. By combining calcium with vitamin D in a single gummy, absorption is optimized without requiring separate supplements. ### Can I give Calcium gummies together with Iron gummies? No. Calcium interferes with iron absorption when the two are in the intestine simultaneously. Space calcium supplements and iron supplements at least 2 hours apart. ### When will this product be back in stock? Our next production run is in progress. What is it? Chubears Iron Gummies are doctor-designed chewable dietary supplements that deliver 13 mg of elemental iron per 2-gummy serving. Formulated with microencapsulated ferric pyrophosphate (SunActive® Fe), they provide gentle iron supplementation with a delicious natural strawberry flavour and none of the metallic aftertaste, nausea, or dark liquid tooth staining associated with conventional iron syrups. ## 2. Who is it for? Chubears Iron is intended for: - **Children requiring iron supplementation:** Particularly where advised or confirmed by a healthcare professional based on clinical evaluation or blood tests. - **Vegetarian children:** Whose diets rely exclusively on non-heme iron from plant sources, which has lower physiological bioavailability. - **Children who refuse iron syrups:** Eliminates daily negotiations and stress around taking iron. - **Growing pre-teens and teenagers:** Meets 50% of the daily iron allowance for adolescents aged 13–18. **Important medical note:** Iron is not a casual daily supplement for every child. If your child has suspected or confirmed iron deficiency, discuss supplementation and the appropriate dose and duration with your paediatrician. ## 3. What does it contain? The active ingredient is **ferric pyrophosphate** (SunActive® Fe, standardised to 8% elemental iron). This advanced micronised form of iron was specifically selected because: - It remains stable in the gummy without interacting with flavours. - It has no metallic taste when chewed. - It is gentle on the gastric mucosa, minimising stomach upset. - Two gummies provide 13 mg elemental iron, exactly 100% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for ages 5–12. ## 4. How should it be taken? - **Daily serving:** 2 gummies a day, chewed thoroughly. - **Separate from milk and calcium:** Calcium significantly hinders iron absorption. Always give Iron gummies at least 2 hours apart from dairy milk or calcium supplements. - **Pair with vitamin C:** Serving with citrus fruit, orange juice, or guava naturally boosts iron absorption. **Safety warning:** Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. Because these gummies taste like strawberry sweets, keep the bottle securely capped and stored out of reach of young children. If accidental overdose occurs, seek immediate emergency medical care. ## 5. Ingredients Corn syrup, sugar, stevia extract (INS 960), water, gelling agents (pectin INS 440, gellan gum INS 418, carrageenan INS 407), acidity regulators (citric acid INS 330, sodium citrate INS 331i), natural strawberry flavour, black carrot juice concentrate (natural colour). Active ingredient: ferric pyrophosphate. **Sweeteners:** Sweetened with sugar and stevia extract (3.2 g sugar per 2 gummies). No artificial colours. ## 7. Allergen information 100% vegetarian. Free from animal gelatin, gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, wheat, and sulphites. ## 8. Frequently asked questions ### How many Chubears Iron gummies should my child take? Two gummies per day make up one full serving (providing 13 mg elemental iron). If your doctor has advised a specific therapeutic dosage, follow their recommendation. ### Will these iron gummies stain teeth like iron syrups? No. Iron syrups stain teeth because the dark liquid swishes over enamel. Chubears gummies are chewed and swallowed like food, eliminating the cosmetic tooth staining problem. Brushing teeth normally after meals remains good practice. ### Can I give Iron gummies together with Calcium gummies or milk? No. Calcium blocks iron absorption in the gut. Always give Iron gummies at least 2 hours before or after drinking milk or taking calcium supplements. ### Does my child definitely need iron? Iron deficiency should be evaluated by a paediatrician through a clinical check-up or blood test (such as haemoglobin and serum ferritin). Do not start iron supplements without medical advice. ### Can teenagers take this product? Yes. Two gummies provide 13 mg of elemental iron, covering approximately 50% of the daily allowance for adolescents aged 13–18. Customer feedback ## 10.
