How to choose a children's multivitamin: doctor checklist

The short answer: When choosing a children’s multivitamin, parents should look for four essential criteria: moderate dosing (50% to 100% of ICMR RDA, avoiding massive mega-doses), clean gelling agents (citrus pectin rather than animal gelatin for vegetarian families), natural plant colours (curcumin, black carrot juice instead of synthetic dyes), and verified manufacturing standards (FSSAI licensed, GMP certified).

A 6-point paediatrician evaluation checklist

1. Check the nutrient percentages (%RDA)

More is not better when it comes to children’s vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K) are stored in the body, and excessive daily doses can accumulate. A sensible pediatric formulation targets 30% to 100% of the daily Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for children. Be cautious of imported supplements designed for foreign diets or products boasting “1000% daily value”.

2. Look at the gelling agent: Pectin vs Gelatin

Many commercial gummy vitamins use bovine or porcine gelatin derived from animal skin and bones. In Indian households, vegetarian supplements set with fruit pectin (derived naturally from citrus fruit peels) are preferred for dietary and cultural reasons, and provide a soft, easy-to-chew texture.

3. Avoid synthetic food dyes

Look carefully at the ingredient label. Avoid synthetic artificial colours such as Tartrazine, Sunset Yellow, or Allura Red. Instead, look for plant-derived concentrates such as curcumin (turmeric extract) and black carrot juice concentrate.

4. Examine sugar and sweetener types

A safe children’s gummy typically contains around 1.5 grams of sugar per gummy. Avoid products laden with excessive artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols (like maltitol or sorbitol in high quantities), which can cause gas, abdominal bloating, and laxative effects in sensitive children.

5. Ensure third-party quality & FSSAI licensing

Confirm that the product is licensed under FSSAI regulations, manufactured in a facility compliant with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards.

6. Separate iron from general multivitamins when possible

Iron has distinct absorption rules and should not be combined casually with calcium. If your child needs everyday nutritional balance, choose a comprehensive multivitamin. If they specifically need iron, use a dedicated, doctor-guided iron supplement taken at a separate time.
